The Ultimate Time Sucker

I told myself I wasn't going to do this again.

I don't need to get one. more. thing. done.

I don't need to get sucked in any further.

I've spent enough time with technology today and the Internet will be here tomorrow.

What I need to do is rest.

I've had a headache all day and I told myself that I would crawl into bed as soon as Lucas was asleep. Todd is out with friends and I just started a terrific book, One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni. I was really looking forward to reading some of it tonight as I drifted peacefully off to sleep for a full eight to nine hours.

That was almost five hours ago.

Instead...

I am visiting blogs, commenting on them, brainstorming posts of my own, Tweeting, responding to e-mails, sending texts, updating my Netflix queue and Goodreads bookshelves, playing Scrabble with three different people, catching up with friends on Facebook, posting photos to Shutterfly, making play dates for next week, researching, Stumbling articles and chastising myself for letting another day go by without doing laundry.

All the while, the battery life on my lap top dwindles. It started in the black at 100% and is now in the red at 18%. That's just embarrassing.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that does this!!

The Internet, I've decided is evil. It's the ultimate time sucker, pure and simple. One simple search leads to five hours of poking around and digging further and before I know it, I have nine tabs open and wonder how did I get here?!

I'm obsessed, that's how.

The better question is why?

Well, I am done with it. I'm stepping away from the computer. For tonight at least.

Lucas will be up and have his 'take me to Disneyland' face on in six hours, IF I'm lucky. Hmph, so much for nine hours of blissful sleep.

Complete time sucking addiction, I am having a terrible time moderating my computer use lately. Who needs sleep when blogs and twitter are awaiting and I, too, have been on the same book for years and it is GOOD, just apparently not as good as the blogosphere.

It never ends. And when you feel like you've finished it for the night, 5 minutes later there's 10 articles in your reader, 3 emails and a partridge in a pear tree.

Take a breath, cut yourself some slack and say "it's gonna be okay." Good that you noticed and don't beat yourself up over it (which I often find myself doing). Sometimes we get too indulgent in something (technology, wine, having too many commitments, etc.), sounds like you know what you need to do, just please do it nicely to yourself.

(now if only I could take my own advice)

I felt impowered that I eliminated tv because it was a time sucker just to find myself in front of this screen at 2 am. Plus it goes by so fast a lot faster then tv... just one more page, post or picture to redo, next thing you know it is time for kids to get up

Amen, amen amen.

And no, you are so not the only one. I was looking for music last night on my comp (after watching several videos, researching, & ordering something from Amazon...) then went to buy & download what I found onto my phone...and fell asleep with the phone in my hand while downloading music. *sigh*

I've been there! It's amazing how looking up one thing turns into a 4 hour time suck!

My general rule is no internet, at least on laptop, when I get home from work. Same with weekends. When my iPhone dies, that's my cue to shut down for the day.

You are definitely not alone. It's like a car wreck that you can't stop looking at. Also, unlike TV, it's interactive so you somehow feel you are in control & that somehow makes it better but really it just sucks more time lol!

You are DEFINITELY not the only one who does this! I am SUCH and addict. I can't tell you how many times I've logged on to check "one little thing" and before I know it two hours have gone by.
Visiting from RDC.

Personally, the ultimate time killer for me is checking Twitter and browsing stats... If I didn't need to be online I would be so much more productive... Totally with you on this post!

Right there with you. I think I do it because sometimes I need something that's just for me. Sometimes I need to stimulate my brain in some way & feel connected to what's going on outside my own little world more than I need sleep. Or more than I want sleep anyway.

Either way, you're not the only one ;)

Oh man, I SO totally know what you're talking about. You're not alone. We need to chat about it while we're in the midst of it. Then we can support one another through our addictions!!!
